Our IoT energy monitoring platform allows you to not only bring together your existing BEMS (Building Energy Management system) so you can see and control all of your buildings from any location but also incorporate your consumption data directly from your energy supplier with no need for additional onsite hardware.
If you want to add further data into the mix, you can also add on low-cost IoT devices such as air quality sensors or lighting sensors, to allow further energy reduction to take place where previously they were deemed non-viable due to hardware and installation costs.
What is a BEMS?
A building energy management system (BEMS) is a central system on your sites that potentially controls your existing heating, cooling, lighting, fire systems, security systems and ventilation systems.
The aim of the BEMS is to provide control over all of these systems and make them work together in line with the buildings operational requirement.
In addition, the BEMS also enables cost reduction by operating the onsite HVAC and lighting systems only when they are needed. This is called a demand-based strategy.
A BEMS allows landlords and building owners to provide optimum comfort for tenants and residents of their buildings and balance their energy bills.
It is now commonplace to have remote access and visibility of the BEMS in your estate to efficiently manage your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) which means maintenance staff don’t have to waste time visiting each building or room to shut down, switch on or adjust temp levels or the air con.
With data being consolidated into a single system, your BEMS improves information management and reporting which leads to quality, informed decision-making, improve performance and a reduction in energy usage, saving money in the process.
If there is no metering on the BEMS, what energy management data can you get?
By working directly with your energy supplier, we can access your sites energy consumption data at half-hourly intervals. Worst case we can get a monthly read to see how your consumption varies each month and seasonally to the weather.
What is IoT?
These are devices you can install which communicate either directly over the internet or wirelessly to a device on site to bolt onto a larger system.
Why would you want all of this together?
By looking at your consumption data against your operational BEMS data you can quickly see if there are any energy spikes that you can resolve at the click of a button. You can also tweak the BEMS strategy (how it controls your building) to deliver further low-cost energy savings and also prove this through the energy data.
By adding in IoT data, we can add another element of efficiency and control to the system which might not have been possible previously due to budget issues. Some examples are as follows:
IoT additional temperature sensors
Sometimes the BEMS temperature sensors just aren’t in the right places and can cause issues with the building overheating or over-cooling, this causes discomfort and increased energy consumption. By adding in more sensors through IoT, the install costs are much lower, and you can get the benefits of having the right data being fed into the system.
IOT CO2 sensors
By adding in co2 sensors you can operate areas based on their occupation rather than when the building is open. By detecting the co2 that we all emit, we can see when ventilation, cooling, heating, or lighting might be required and turn it off when it isn’t.
